Anthony Kieffer emigrated to the United States with his wife and seven children in 1830, settling in East Eden, New York, near Buffalo. His children Josephine, Peter, and Phoebe went west as pioneers in 1855, helping found Elba, Minnesota. The Kieffer Valley is named after them, and the Kreidermacher Valley after Phoebe's husband. Anthony's son Philip continued on the family farm. Philip's children Charles, Joseph, and William moved to Elba in the 1880's.
